AAP (org)

The Aryan American Party, formed from the unification of three staunchly racist and neo-Nazi groups in the USA in the early 2010's, grew steadily on a platform of (as one party member, Laurence Earl, put it) "moderate extremism."  The party grew steadily in power,  gaining more constituencies in local US government than any but the big three parties (Republican, Democrat and Green).  The AAP won a large number of races in the 2032 and 2036 elections.

AAS (nat: 3/2/2)

The Aryan American States were born from unresolved racism issues in the political heart of the United States.  Following the South's defeat in the Civil War, racism and inter-state conflict continued to fester, occasionally manifesting in rioting and assassination but never adequately acknowledged or dealt with by the powerful parties concerned.  With the California earthquake of 2016 and the Social Security bankruptcy of the 2020's, racism gained fervor.  The Aryan American Party, with strong showings in the elections of the 2030's and 2040's, eventually took power from the older parties in the southern US.  When the Supreme Court struck down a particularly racist law in 2056, Texas led the other AAP states in secession, beginning the Second American Civil War (2057).

At present, the USA and AAS keep a barely-maintained peace.

AIDS (med)

AIDS, the Acquired Immune Deficiency Syndrome, grew from a relatively minor disease to be the greatest killer of the impoverished in the early 21st century.  Development of a vaccine in the 2030's was effective in stopping the disease in developed countries, but the vaccine's expense (over US$500 per dose) prevented its use in less-developed countries.  This was seen as a failure of the developed nations, and worldwide protests in the 2040's were a natural result.  Eventually, the price came down to a reasonable level and the disease was finally eliminated, but far too late, according to most developing countries.

ASEAN (org)

The Association of South-East Asian Nations, primarily designed as a way to cool down and ameliorate regional international hostilities, ASEAN was dissolved (and effectively failed in its purpose) in 2039, soon after Indonesia invaded Malaysia.  Thailand fought hard to keep ASEAN viable, but the Indo-Malaysian war was too great a strain.

Admirals

While they might not seem to deserve an antry of their own, the admirals of Known Space, or more precisely the space naval admirals, have exerted a disporportionate force on history and thus must be commented on.

Command of a space navy's fleet, or even of an entire navy, is a vast responsibility and a vast power.  With the vast military resources available within a typical fleet, and with communication as slow as it is, control of a fleet effectively grants military control of an entire system, if not an even greater volume of space.  Of course, civilian governments try their best to guarantee the loyalty of their military forces, and frequently employ other means (failsafe devices, loyalty drugs, espionage, etc.) to guarantee that military force cannot be used against them if worse comes to worst.  Nonetheless, many admirals do allow power to corrupt them, and many have historically rebelled against their superiors.  To be fair, some have had pure intentions -- liberating the people under them, or the inhabitants of a system from tyrannical rulers who are not even in the same star system, for example -- but such nobility has been rare.

The first historically famous admiral to have rebelled was Ramakrishna Ganesh Chandragupta, who went on to found the Mahabharati Empire.  Following after him were Bartholomew Harris, Ding Huilong and the three founders of the High Kingdom.  Some additionally consider Chen yongxing, founder of the Yan Empire, to have been an admiral of sorts.

AlphaBank (cor: 8/5/7, corp 68.190/2.558/2084/Petit-Terre, Petit-Sol, ICA)

AlphaBank is the largest bank in existence, and, according to some measures, the largest corporation in Known Space.  It was formed in 2084 from the merger of CitiCorp, Chase and Daiwa.  Corporate HQ was originally dispersed across the Earth, but has since been moved to Petit-Terre in the ICA.

AlphaBank's primary enterprises are of course banking and finance (in which it has 22.4% of market share), but it is also involved in insurance (20.5%), inforate (9.1%) and communications (7.5%).

The AlphaBank Dollar (A$, or often simply $) is the most powerful and widely-accepted currency in Known Space.  The majority (approx. 52% measured by population) of political entities in Known Space use the A$ as their currency.

AlphaBank also maintains the largest corporate military in Known Space, with 8.78 million security personnel and 2.82 million paramilitary.

AlphaBank's corporate personality is quite conservative and reactive, but on the more local level it is usually very flexible and progressive.

Artifact, the

The Artifact, or more formally, the Thomas-Ng-Duc Object, is one of the strangest anomalies in Known Space.  It was discovered in the year 2165 by DMTP scouts Evelyn Thomas, Wayne Ng and Thu-hun Duc during a fairly routine survey mission near the Babylon system.

The Artifact lays only a little more than a single light-year from Babylon, but is invisible from there, as well as from the rest of Known Space.  This is because of the Artifact's strange properties, few of which have even given hints to science as to their meaning or even means.

The Artifact is roughly 23.57 cm in diameter, but amazingly, it somehow emits approximately

Auros (cor: 3/2/7, corp 0.600/0.178/2138/Earth)

Auros is one of the few corporations whose roots are relatively recent, having been formed less than 100 years ago and not having been formed from mergers, as most large corps are.

Auros is primarily a banking group (holding about 8.4% of total market share).  Its currency, the Auro (Au), is preferred by many to the AlphaBank dollar because of its rock-solid value (only 1.29% inflation for fiscal 2220).  Auros also engages in political administration (4.5%), education (3.2%) and consulting and legal services (with approximately 1.2% and 2.1% or market share, respectively).
