BTST (tfs)

BTST, which stands for Biotipped Slugthrowers, is a weapon type devised in the late 2090's and early 2100's to combat the rise in exoskeletal armor.  The latter's extremely tough but mobile nature meant that offensive capabilities of infantry weapons then available had taken a nosedive.  Thus, weapon manufacturers created various weapons equipped to use ammunition which contained a tiny amount of an extremely virulent toxic agent (either nerve gas or a fast-acting biological derivative in most cases).  The actual penetration of the weapons was unaffected;  however, upon achieving penetration, death was almost guaranteed for the target.  The effects on unarmored people were predictably gruesome.  Only weapons specially equipped to use BTST rounds could do so;  the toxicity of unfired rounds was deemed too high (by most manufacturers) not to have some sort of protection system built into the weapon itself.

BTST rounds were dubbed "batshit" by American and Australian forces, and the name stuck.  Many languages' colloquial terms for BTST is something similar, such as "guano guns" or the like.

BTST rounds, while extremely effective, were considered beyond the pale by most civilized nations, especially due to their lingering after-effects and effects on civilians.  Thus, the LSN declared such weapons illegal in 2105;  in a famous speech, the chair of the BTST Policy Committee of the LSN declared, "Anyone so psychotic as to use BTST weapons on this earth belongs not in office but in protective custody."  The LSN granted itself the right to depose any government or regime which used BTST weapons, as well.

This was seen by many poorer nations as yet another example of developed nations declaring themselves the moral superiors of others.  Although the weapons were declared illegal, their increasing ease of manufacture (especially compared with the armors they were designed to stop) and effectiveness meant that many nations illicitly continued to make them.  When a Syrian special forces team used BTST's in an espionage operation against Israeli forces in 2117 (ironically to gain access to Israeli exoskeletal armor technology), Israel pressed for full punishment of Syria by LSN forces.  This was done, and Syria's government was removed from office forcefully in 2118 (after Israel provided sufficient evidence of Syrian BTST usage).  After this point, few nations within the range of LSN domination dared to use BTST's, bourgeosie plot or not.

The weapons continued to develop, and have continued to be manufactured by various illegal organizations throughout Known Space.  However, with the advent of gauss weapons and high-power lasers, BTST's proved unnecessary and excessively hazardous to their users.  BTST weapons are now used only by the eccentric.

Babylon (sys)

Babylon is the main system of the Islamic Sphere.  It is also one of the most unusual systems in Known Space, due to its proximity to the Artifact and due to its status as the location of the Shojin sentient species.

Although it is now the main system in the Islamic Sphere, it is not as old as, for example, Jayapura or Malacca.

Approximately 37 million Shojin live on Ur, which is also the central world of the system.  The Islamic Sphere is quite strict about non-intereference with the Shojin, who have been deemed too culturally immature to deal with the existence of non-Shojin sapients.  While humans (and, to a lesser extent, Starwhales) have settled Ur, their settlements are severely restricted as to location, radiation, etc.

Beyond, the (gen)

The Beyond is the area beyond Known Space.  That is, it consists of that area of space which humanity has not explored first or second-hand.  It therefore begins roughly 30 light-years from Earth.

When discussing directions in the Beyond (as well as in Known Space, sometimes), people generally use Cartesian coordinates.  Thus, the areas of the Beyond which lie in the direction of the Earth's south celestial pole are referred to as the -Z, while those which lie "above" the plane of the ecliptic are referred to generally as the +Z.  Of course, such descriptions are usually pretty general, rather than technical.  Some have attempted to formalize the exact "quadrants" of the Beyond, but no single scheme is in popular use.

Colloquial terms for the Beyond include "The Big Black," "The Deeps" and "The Abyss."

Humanity has hints of what lies within the Beyond, but only vague ones.  Some Starwhales have reported seeing other intelligent beings beyond their section of Known Space, but they refuse to give details.  Some speculate that the Tripods called off their war against humanity when some greater threat from the Beyond necessitated their attention.

Bezmernie,

Bhutan (nat)

Bhutan is currently the oldest kingdom on Earth, and looks it.  Although some aspects of modern life have trickled in, many parts of the country could easily be from the 20th century or even earlier.  With the Indian wars beginning to cool down, Bhutan is enjoying a certain tourist renaissance, although many Bhutanese dislike their country being considered "quaint."

Biafra,

Big One, the (evn)

The "Big One" is the common name for the massive earthquake which hit southern California in 2016.  Although loss of life (11,000 dead within a week, over 250,000 injured) was relatively minimal compared to losses due to other, equally-powerful earthquakes in other countries, the economic damage was pretty much unparalleled in the history of the world -- more than $517.4 billion in damage was attributed to the Big One.  Federal aid was able to resolve many problems within a few years, but the drain on the federal US budget eventually plunged the world into a recession (2018-21) and, according to some, was the ultimate antecedent of the USA/AAS split.

The Big One was also quite famous due to the extremely harsh conditions which remained for the survivors.  Large parts of southern California, including all of LA, remained under the Federal Emergency Management Agency's martial law for three years.  This caused the economy a huge loss, and California never again became the powerhouse it had been in the late 20th century.
