China (nat: 3/4/4)

China in 2221 bears little resemblance to the nation of the same name which existed in the 20th century.  China's borders, for one, have changed dramatically; the independence of Tibet and Taiwan in 2093, of large parts of Inner Mongolia and of Yunnan in 2101, as well as the loss of claims in the South China Sea, has left China a small remnant of its previous size.  While China does maintain colonies in the Solar System, and was intrumental in the early colonization of non-Solar systems, it lost its momentum in the late 2000's and early 2100's and has not recovered since.

Its politics have changed quite a lot as well.  With Jiang Zemin's fall in the 2010's and eventual death in 2022, the old Communist Party-dominated system basically fell apart.  Yang Zhonghan, the Premier from roughly the fall of Jiang until the 2040's, was also the first of the real post-Mao era politicians, with a good appreciation of democracy and reform.  Yang's Revitalization Campaign (2017-25) was basically an attempt at divorcing the CCP from its central role in Chinese political life.  The CCP continued to be the dominant party in Chinese politics for a long while, but the old system did gradually fall apart.  As with much of the world, China again turned to nationalism in the 2030's and 40's as its dominant unifying principle, culminating in the founding of various trans-China parties (including the simply-named Chinese Party, with members in Malaysia, Singapore, Hong Kong SAR, China and Taiwan) which were quite successful until their pro-Chinese rhetoric became bluntly racist.  China maintained an uneasy peace with the various megacorporation through the 21st century, but was outright opposed to trans-corp organizations such as the LSN, in which its main ally was the United States.

However, the neo-nationalist systems of the 21st century were doomed to fail, and in 2103, the US and China forced the dissolution of the UN.  China briefly tried to found its own international ruling body (the Asian Council), but due to its history of racism and also to its isolation from international affairs, only Georgia and Afghanistan joined the new grouping.  The Asian Council idea soon fell apart and China joined the LSN as an equal but rather bitter member in 2120.

China has developed quite a lot in the last century, trying to shed its image as an outdated tyrant country, and largely being successful in this endeavor.  It has continued to be one of the biggest opponents of corporate power, occasionally hearkening back to its communist past, but usually taking a human rights perspective.  Some see a dire irony in the fact that China in 2221 is one of the most outspoken defenders of human dignity in the face of corporate exploitation.; others see it as a natural outgrowth of China's past.  The current major parties in China are the Chinese Democracy Party, an offshoot of the China Democratic Party founded in the last years of the 20th century; the Buddha Light Party; and the Chinese Social Democratic Party.  In the 2220's, many people look to China as a force for morality in the LSN; others see China's modern attitude as outdated and useless.

Colony War, First (evn: 2121-2122)

The First Colony War began in 2121 in the Jayapura system, following approximately a decade of unresponsive government by the LSN-appointed governor, Joseph Conniff.  General strikes were followed by violent attacks (mostly through datalinks) on the government's infrastructure.  Conniff responded with restrictive supply rationing, but several of the out-system settlements had already fallen to the revolution and quickly began supply shipments.  The Conniff-controlled settlements became police states, with no-one allowed out of their domiciles save for work, and even then only if their work was vital to the continued operation of the settlement.  However, datalinks were hard to break and the revolution spread from within.

The LSN fleet at Jayapura, headed by Admiral Xavier Escobar, had remained neutral during all of this.  However, when Conniff's troops ordered the domiciles of several known revolutionaries depressurized, Escobar decided to side with the revolutionaries and reported to the revolutionaries' leadership council.  Having lost fleet support, Conniff soon surrendered (in 2122).  The Jayapura Fleet, now flagless (as the Jayapura revolutionaries had yet to decide on either a name or a government for their revolution), swept the remaining Conniff-loyal troops from the system.

Meanwhile, the colonies at Malacca followed suit, and demanded independence.

Corporations

Corporations (also commonly called corps) in 2221 are every bit the equals of nationstates when it comes to power and importance in Known Space.  Corporations differ from nationstates in that they tend to be organized with profit and production in mind, and they tend to have little attachment to physical territory.  They do not necessarily have any sort of linguistic or cultural identities, though many do nonetheless.  Finally, the primary ideology of corps is capitalism, though some are effectively communist or socialist.  Though they are quite distinct from nationstates, the boundaries are never especially clear, and continue to blur.

The rise of the corps in the 21st century was largely due to the inability or unwillingness of the old nationstates to accept the new economic realities of world trade and investment.  Corps continued to become more and more powerful, to the point where even a moderate corp had a bigger economy than most nations.  This continued to the point where the corps began to chafe at the bit of nationstate government, and began to desire their own domains.  Though physical territories were becoming less necessary, they were still important enough that the corps had to consider finding physical locations separate from those of the traditional nationstates.  Thus, the first organizations to leave Earth take to the stars were the corps, and therefore they tend to dominate off-Earth.  Many people believe that the future lies in the stars, and that it therefore belongs to the corps.

The modern corp tends to be at least as wide in scope as a nationstate, and only the smallest are focused purely on single markets.  Horizontal monopolies are the rule, at least among the upper tiers.

Life in a corp tends to be quite different from life in a nationstate.  Corps tend to provide for their employee-citizens quite universally, and as efficiency tends to be higher, fewer people go 'wasted' -- education rates are very high, and unemployment is extremely low as a rule.  Many corps also engage in employee exchange programs, trading those with skills they have in abundance for other corps' employees with skills they need.  As this might indicate, though, corps tend to be somewhat more focused on the 'bottom line', and therefore the unproductive find little acceptance in corporate life.  In addition, while corps tend to provide for all employees rather equally, things like personal space and privacy tend to be at a premium.

A list of the major corps of Known Space, as well as several lesser corps, follows.  The corps are listed in terms of size, rated by gross revenues.

Crime

In 2221, crime is still a great worry to humanity.  The basic causes of it -- desire and the temporary loss of control -- still plague humanity.
