Nationstate

Nationstates in their modern form are primarily traced back to the nationalism of the first French Republic on Earth.  Nationstates have traditionally been considered to be delimited physical territories with associated linguistic and/or cultural ties that cause the vast majority of the populace to consider themselves part of a whole.  The primary ideology of nationstates has been nationalism, though various forms of materialism (namely state capitalism and communism) have been used as buffers or adjuncts to the primary ideology.

Nationstates are distinguished from corps, which may have widely dispersed physical presences and disunified linguisitic identities, as well as varying cultural identities.  The primary difference, though, has been the variance in ideologies; corps are almost always of the so-called non-national capitalist sorts, while any capitalism found in nationstates is secondary to nationalism.

Nationstates are generally restricted to the Earth, where they are still the dominant form of government.  However, the LSN (the primary government of the Earth) and many other Sphere governments are definitely not nationstates.  Nationstates do exist off the Earth, but they are quite rare.  This is generally assumed to be due to the difficulty of creating a common historical and cultural bond among those who have located themselves in areas which were until recently completely unpopulated.  The majority of humanity does in fact live within nationstates, but this is still far less than was the case in the latter 20th century, for example, when the figure was effectively 100%.  Nationstates as a whole seem to be in decline, though few nationalists would agree with this.  Many future historians assume that nationstates will come back into flower when off-Earth settlements have had a long enough time to develop their own unique cultural identities.

New Durban (pln: DMTP/E10)

Picture of New DurbanNew Durban is a moon of Botha, and one of the major bodies in the Luyten system.  It is currently volcanically inactive and has only a trace atmosphere.  However, it apparently had an exciting early history, with a massive canyon-like fracture running roughly from pole to pole.  This fracture, usually just called the Cut, is the result of a large collision early in the moon's history, and extends well over 200 KM deep in some locations.  The moon is rich in light metals and oxygen, which are easily accessed through shallow mines or through the Cut.  Furthermore, it is generally in the lee of the ferric eruptions from Zulu, which means that large portions of the surface are covered with fine-grained ferric dust, giving the planet its pinkish hue.  As with many moons, New Durban is tidally locked, with one side always facing Botha.  However, all sides get sunlight, as the moon also rotates around Botha.

Like most of the Luyten system, New Durban was settled primarily by South Africans and Germans, with a standard mix of other heritages and backgrounds.

As with many planets, New Durban's settlements are grouped into wards, each of which is comprised of several dozen cities organized in a fairly regular pattern.  The wards of New Durban are as follows:

  1. Nordtal
  2. Mittetal
  3. Eisighügel
  4. Rosacampo
  5. Südtal
  6. Lowenmacht
  7. Potsdam
  8. Australis
  9. Steinwald
  10. Bloemfontein
  11. Bikoward
  12. New Kimberley
  13. Jacobsburg
The first nine of these are on the side of New Durban which permanently faces Botha; the rest are on the 'back side'.

One of the largest and most prominent cities on New Durban, Keuschburg, is located in Mittetal.
