This pagoda was recently discovered near Dunhuang when a strong tremor shifted a large dune. The sand had kept it remarkably intact, even preventing corrosion of the bronze fixtures. The style is distinctly northern Chinese, and although the date of its construction is still not clear, it may be the earliest pagoda in China, predating even the famous White Horse Temple.
